The project for the reception areas of this multiplex cinema maintains the disconcerting, empty space of an existing shopping mall. A large, square, empty foyer is organized by the use of regularly spaced lighting, alternated with fluorescent stilts, used as support for LCD screens. All the systems are organized on independent grids, and can be activated to give life to different, interactive landscapes. A first interactive scenarios is made of standard spot lights, integrated into the floor and ceiling. This grid of lamps is connected to a color mixer and a basic sensor network made from ordinary market products. The public can activate a spotlight by their movement, creating instant and unexpected attention points, similar to theatre scene dynamics. A small director’s area can manage the free play of light and visitors during theme events. In a second interactive scenery, only the fluorescent stilts and LCD screens are activated. The VJ, from the director’s desk can activate video installations, images moving from one screen to another, colors and sounds for visitors to explore and dive into. A third scenery is constituted by another system of fluorescent lights creating a dense, continuous, suspended ceiling of neon signs. The colored signs can be activated and combined in clusters, and switched on unexpectedly. The signs create an urban advertisement landscape, redundant and chaotic, typical of commercial communication. The chaos is switched off after a moment, restoring the large void to its condition of quiet darkness and emptiness. From this cyclical black-out condition, the space will come to life again with new games and combinations. The public can change the colors of the light, as well as its turning on and off, through their movement. The space, which can be activated easily, creates a playful atmosphere and fosters socializing.
